Jacques van der Vyver
HBV is pleased to announce the arrival of our new Winemaker, Jacques van der Vyver.
Growing up in Cape Town, Jacques’ introduction to the wine industry did not start with glass of wine, but rather from accompanying his father to site meetings associated with the construction of some of South Africa’s top wineries back in the early 1990's. “I have fond memories of running between tanks and getting rides on the forklift at Flagstone Winery, when still situated at the V&A Waterfront." This is what led Jacques to pursue a career in winemaking. Jacques has a degree in viticulture and oenology, the study of vineyard management and winemaking respectively, from the University of Stellenbosch.
After graduating from Elsenburg near Stellenbosch, Jacques completed his first vintage at Flagstone then Jordan Estate, Tokara Estate, Boordy Vineyards in Baltimore, MD, Steenberg Vineyards, Joostenberg and Waterkloof Winery. Since then he has decided to accept an opportunity at HBV and a chance to work again in the United States – the East Coast.
In his spare time, Jacques enjoys surfing, hiking, fishing and a good braai (barbeque) with friends.
Jacques is participating regularly in cellar tours and will be hosting occasional winemaker dinners. We are delighted with his arrival – please stop by and welcome Jacques to HBV and to Litchfield.
Jacques works very closely with Chris in the cellar. Please look for them around the vineyard!
